Annihilation - Movie Review. Annihilation is directed by Alex Garland and stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac. A group of soldiers entered an extraterrestrial phenomenon known as The Shimmer but only one made it out barely alive.
His wife, Lena, played by Natalie Portman volunteers to go into The Shimmer to find out what happened to him.We were really exited to watch this movie mainly because we love Ex-Machina which also directed by Garland. We have been craving a good sci-fi movie. We should have mentioned that this movie is also based on a novel by the same name.
The first thing we should say about this movie is people should go with an open minded. It was shot beautifully especially when the group was inside The Shimmer. As you can see from the trailer, The Shimmer looks like a big bubble.
The world inside The Shimmer is eerie because you dont know what happened to the group that came in before and the guy who made it out, kinda came out wrong. In the trailer you saw some of the creature and they are mutated to the effect of The Shimmer. We were completely clenched with one of the creatures because it was so disturbing.
The casts, they worked well together. Portman is the lead of the movie and she looked pretty bad ass. But the stand out to us was Gina Rodriguez. She was raw!
Annihilation is a unique film. The first two acts were really strong but in the third act, it kinda lost a little bit. We felt like they lingered on the certain themes that did not need more attention to.
We appreciate Garland's vision in his storytelling. Annihilation is a beautiful movie and worth your time.
